Proteins! Winter Delights

Healthy foods are in vogue suddenly because people have started to make health conscious and reasonable eating choices and when it comes to living longer, protein is the key in the eating department. I am not a nutritionist but a passionate foodie and a little health minded person, so my article is purely based on my own successful experiments.

As soon as we head year end, which obviously starts for me from October, I deliberately add below foods to our daily intake as they are energy boosters at the same time are tasty treats too.

Below are my top 5 healthy foods and reasons why these foods are my best picks.

Spinach
Most underrated veggie but definitely a superfood. A big box of fresh baby spinach from Sam’s club is my must buy every week. I prep these leafy greens in a very Desi style every week at least twice or I use it as toppings in pizzas and pasta recipes. To mention a few delicacies that are a guaranteed crowd pleaser as well are – Dal Palak (lentils and spinach), Palak fry (with peanut combo), Palak puri (spinach bread).

Spinach is Excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids), manganese, folate, copper, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin E, calcium and vitamin C

Broccoli
Though we (me and my husband) are not very fond of its taste, I add a very little amount of it in prepped white pasta, mix veggie fry and fried rice as it gives an incredible flavorful meal.

Broccoli is a great source of vitamins K and C, a good source of folate (folic acid) and also provides potassium, fiber.

Avocado
Creamy Me, the avocado shouted! I love this fruit more for its creamy texture than for its nutritional value. My little one loves the puréed form which covers up his high potassium and fiber nutrient dosage. In fact, avocados have more potassium than bananas. Nachos with mashed avocados or Guacamole is my favorite snacking for lazy evenings.

Avocados are a great source of vitamins C, E, K, and B-6, as well as riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium.

Chicken
My favorite of all, since childhood I have always had the best recipes of chicken, so it eventually became my most loved food. Be it my mother or my in-law mother, I feel they are experts in preparing tasty chicken dishes. Have had got the opportunity to eat chicken recipes in 3 different countries but nothing like what mothers make.

Chicken is a carb free food which contains Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Selenium, Niacin, Vitamin B-6 and Vitamin A

Eggs
Egg is an everyday food for gym lovers and health followers. Be it scrambled eggs, veggie fry with egg toppings or just a simple omelet. In spirit of sustaining mental and physical health I start my day with egg breakfast on most of the mornings. I have named it “convenient morning food” as it’s absolutely easy to prep with very little ingredients required.

Eggs are a very rich source of inexpensive, high quality protein. More than half the protein of an egg is found in the egg white along with vitamin B2 and lower amounts of fat than the yolk. Eggs are rich sources of selenium, vitamin D, B6, B12 and minerals such as zinc, iron and copper.
